Free Homes, Better Futures: Can New Haven Fix the Early Educator Crisis?

Image

The country’s first rent-free teacher housing village opened Thursday, October 15, 2026, on Howard Street in New Haven, CT. Developed by the independent nonprofit Friends Center for Children under CEO Allyx Schiavone's leadership, the village currently provides free housing to eight early childhood educators.

The goals are to alleviate the high cost of living and support workforce stability. A dedicated complex features five homes, four constructed in direct partnership with the Yale School of Architecture, and educators interested in the program can apply internally through the Friends Center for Children as part of their employment and compensation benefits review.
