As of late April 2026, more than 1,250 black bear sightings have been reported in Connecticut, a significant surge, with peak activity in the northwest Hartford suburbs, including West Hartford. The growing population, estimated at over 1,000–1,200 bears, has led to increased encounters, including 40 home break-ins in 18 towns, prompting the CT DEEP to warn residents to remove bird feeders and secure trash.
