Political Parties in Connecticut

Connecticut General Statutes 9-372(6) define a minor party as "a political party or organization which is not a major party and whose candidate for the office in question received at the last-preceding regular election for such office." Currently, minor parties with statewide enrollment privileges are:

  • Independent Party
  • Green Party
  • Libertarian Party
  • Working Families Party

The Independent Party of Connecticut is a qualified statewide minor political party. According to Ballotpedia, it is a party "dedicated to ensuring open, honest government with realistic objectives." The group gained ballot access in Connecticut in 2008.

A two-party dominant system has created division in Connecticut and other states because Democrats and Republicans stand on opposite ends of the spectrum on many issues. In addition, it often keeps independent politicians from gaining traction and sometimes discourages people from researching each candidate, regardless of their party.

Rob Hotaling, an Executive at Webster Bank and an Engineer, is running for Governor of Connecticut as an Independent. He is committed to creating tech-driven and diverse solutions to problems such as:

  • Affordable housing and healthcare
  • High tax burdens
  • Food inflation
  • Transportation costs
  • Gun violence

Mr. Hotaling is an expert in gunshot detection. He created Verbi, a mobile-first automated gunshot and explosion detection platform for school safety. Read more about it here.
