Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8-hour training that prepares participants to interact with individuals in crisis and connect them to mental health services. It offers concrete tools and uses role-playing and simulations to show trainees how to provide initial help.
This training has a five-step action plan, ALGEE:
- Assess for risk of suicide or harm
- Listen non-judgmentally
- Give reassurance and information
- Encourage appropriate professional help
- Encourage self-help and other support strategies
Certified Mental Health First Aid instructors provide a list of community health-care professionals and national resources. If you want to attend the virtual training, contact mentalhealthfirstaid@mhconn.org.
