Gifted and Black Lawmakers Expelled in Tennessee

On Thursday, April 6, 2023, the Tennessee House voted to expel two Representatives over a protest they led calling for gun reform after the mass shooting at Nashville’s Covenant School, where six people died. Most of the Nashville Council members say they will vote to reinstate Rep. Justin Jones, and Democrats in Memphis have more than enough votes to reinstate the other Rep. Justin Pearson.

Update- The Nashville Metropolitan Council voted to reappoint Justin Jones to the House of Representatives, sending the ousted lawmaker back to occupy the House District 52 seat as an interim representative.

Update- Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, reinstated by local county commissions, are back at work.
