Destinations Struggle with Overtourism

According to a 2023 study by MoneyTransfers.com, Phuket is the world's most overcrowded destination. Other places on the list are:

Machu Picchu, Peru

This UNESCO World Heritage Site typically sees more than 5,000 visitors daily in July and August. Overtourism has led to the degradation of the natural environment and ruins, as well as vandalism and pollution.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Overtourism has impacted Amsterdam by displacing local people, especially young families, who struggle to find affordable housing. It also leads to noise pollution, excessive traffic, and rowdy behavior.

So, where are a few destinations not experiencing overtourism?:

Corsica

It is a mountainous Mediterranean island and territorial collectivity of France. According to a press release by Intrepid Travel, visitors can enjoy an authentic, tranquil, and immersive experience without the crowds.

Panama City, Panama

The city has 5 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, two archaeological sites, Panama Viejo and Casco Antiguo, and three national parks. With all this, it is still an off-the-beaten-path destination. Book a trip to the Panama Canal here.

Borneo

This island, divided among three countries — Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia, welcomes tourists. It is home to the oldest rainforest in the world and Mount Kinabalu, the tallest mountain in Southeast Asia.  Enjoy a Viator nature excursion.
