Cardiac screening programs for athletes can identify cardiovascular abnormalities that could increase the risk of sudden cardiac death during sports. The main goal of these programs is to prevent sudden deaths in young athletes.
Cardiac screenings can detect 99 percent of heart abnormalities, including:
- Abnormal femoral pulses in the leg
- Enlargement of the heart
- Heart murmurs
- Heart rhythm disorders
- High blood pressure
- Leaky heart valves
- Other heart valve disorders
- Structural conditions
The Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center at UConn offers screenings. More information is here.
